«Отчаянный шаг человека, лишенного элементарного человеческого общения и гуманного обращения» — так описала в письме к начальнику ИК-5 в Нарышкино Орловской области голодовку Михаила Кригера вокалистка группы Garbage Ширли Мэнсон. Активист с тридцатилетним опытом, борец за права политзаключенных, противник войны в Украине бьется за то, чтобы его выпустили из принудительной изоляции. Он прошел 13 дней сухой голодовки. Сейчас Кригер снова начал пить чай, но голодовку не прервал.

“A desperate act by a man deprived of basic human contact and humane treatment” — this is how Shirley Manson, the lead singer of the band Garbage, described Mikhail Kriger’s hunger strike in her letter to the head of Penal Colony No. 5 in Naryshkino, Oryol Region.

Kriger, a veteran activist with thirty years of experience, a defender of political prisoners, and an opponent of the war in Ukraine, is fighting to be released from enforced isolation. He endured 13 days of a dry hunger strike. He has now begun drinking tea again, but has not ended the strike.

Уже три с половиной года сотни тысяч украинцев и их семей живут и работают в Канаде по программе Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET), созданной в ответ на полномасштабное вторжение России в Украину. Среди них — врачи, учителя, айтишники, артисты, матери и дети. По схожим гуманитарным программам в Канаде также живут жертвы других войн.

Эти люди не выбирали эмиграцию — их заставили покинуть дом бомбы и насилие. Им удалось наладить жизнь в Канаде, однако из-за постоянно меняющихся правил иммиграционного законодательства многие из них лишились возможности натурализоваться и не имеют гарантий на будущее. Иммиграция — долгий и очень дорогой процесс.

Поэтому мы призываем всех неравнодушных подписать петицию к Правительству Канады о создании однократного пути к ПМЖ для участников гуманитарных программ. Просим правительство сдержать обещание и вернуть людям то, чего их лишила война — безопасность.

Петицию инициировал не RCDA, но мы полностью поддерживаем её — как и более 40 000 подписантов.

For over three years, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians and their families have lived and worked in Canada under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) program, created in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion. Among them are doctors, teachers, IT specialists, artists, mothers, and children. Similar humanitarian programs also support victims of other conflicts.

These people didn’t choose to leave — they were forced by bombs and violence. They’ve rebuilt their lives here, but changing immigration rules have left many without a path to permanent status or stability. Immigration is a long, costly, and uncertain process in Canada.

We call on everyone to sign the petition to the Government of Canada to create a one-time permanent residency pathway for emergency arrivals. We urge the government to keep its promise and restore what war has taken — safety.

The petition was not initiated by RCDA, but we fully support it, together with over 40,000 signatories.

“Returning the Names”, Montreal, 2025

For the third year in a row, the Russian Canadian Democratic Alliance organized the commemoration event “Returning the Names” — a day of remembrance for the victims of political repressions in the USSR.

We believe this is one of the most meaningful events of the year — a space of collective memory and shared reflection.
Memory is our responsibility, our task, and our only way forward. We cannot avoid this work — we must go through it, and doing so together gives us strength.

During the event, we not only read the names of the victims of repression, but also read letters from today’s political prisoners, written specially for Returning the Names. We are deeply grateful to our colleagues who shared these letters with us — they reminded us that repression and the struggle for freedom are not only matters of the past, but also of the present.

We honour the memory of those who were exiled, imprisoned, and executed under the Soviet regime and stand in solidarity with those imprisoned for their beliefs today.

By reading the names, we restore humanity to what was once reduced to statistics. We must understand the scale of the tragedy — but also see the faces and fates behind the numbers

The regime sought to erase these people from history, to silence and shame them, to make us forget.
But we gather to return their names, to keep alive the memory of those who were killed or forgotten.

We need freedom and memory — because one cannot exist without the other

We thank everyone who joined us, who hears this call, and who continues this work of remembrance and solidarity.

There are two important days we mark in late Octob

There are two important days we mark in late October.
• October 29 — the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions.
• October 30 — the Day of Political Prisoners. The day was established by soviet dissidents in the camps: they declared a hunger strike demanding better conditions and an end to repressions.

In just three decades — from 1930 to 1959 — millions passed through the GULAG system. On these days, we honour the memory of those who exiled, imprisoned, executed under the Soviet regime and stand in solidarity with those imprisoned for their beliefs today.

Write letters to political prisoners.
Tell their stories.

In the United States, ICE raids continue. Among those detained are Russians who spoke out against the war in Ukraine. And instead of protection, they are effectively being sent to Russian prisons through American detention. This is a real threat to their lives and their freedom.

And this is a frightening trend. We speak about it together — anti-war diaspora organizations in Canada and the United States @democracy4russia Because their fate is also our fate. Their light is also our light.

We call on Canada to reach out to those who chose freedom. Keep this light alive. It is your light, too.

In September, journalist and activist Sergey Kurop

In September, journalist and activist Sergey Kuropov was designated a “foreign agent” in Russia. Sergey lives and works in Canada. We interviewed him two years ago about his long and arduous immigration journey, during which even the UN had to intervene. That interview is available on our YouTube channel. Now we have asked Sergey to share his thoughts on being labeled a “foreign agent” and to comment on this issue specifically for RCDA.
